Likes Don't Pay The Bills
I get this complaint at least once a week:
"Umair, we post every day. We have 2,000 followers. But we're not getting any actual customers from it. What are we doing wrong?"
Here's the brutal truth: most local business social media is performative, not strategic. It looks busy but accomplishes nothing.
If you're a service business and your social media isn't generating leads, here's exactly why - and the framework I use with every client to fix it.
The 3 Reasons Your Social Media Fails
Reason 1: You're Posting What You THINK People Want
Generic "Monday Motivation" quotes. Stock photos with text overlays. Trending audios with no connection to your business.
Your customers don't care. They want to know: Can you fix my problem? Are you trustworthy? Will you show up on time?
Reason 2: No Clear Call To Action
Every post should have a purpose. "Call us today." "DM for a free quote." "Visit our website."
Most local businesses just... post. Then wonder why nothing happens.
Reason 3: You're Not Showing The Work
Your work IS your marketing. Before/after photos. Behind-the-scenes videos. Customer reactions. Process explanations.
This is what builds trust. Not polished graphics.
The 4-Part Content Framework
This is the exact framework I use with every client. Mix these 4 content types throughout your week:
1. Show The Work (40% of posts)
Before/after photos. Time-lapses of jobs. Quick fix videos. The actual thing you get paid to do.
Example: A photo of a panel upgrade with caption "Replaced this outdated panel in Tampa today. Old wiring was a fire hazard. New 200-amp service ready for the next 30 years."
2. Show The People (25% of posts)
Your team. Yourself. Office moments. People hire people, not faceless logos.
Example: A quick reel of your technician explaining how he diagnoses a common issue. Personality > perfection.
3. Show Results (20% of posts)
Customer testimonials. Review screenshots. Project completion celebrations.
Example: Screenshot of a 5-star Google review with the customer's permission, plus a photo of the job you did for them.
4. Show Knowledge (15% of posts)
Tips. Common mistakes. Maintenance advice. Position yourself as the expert.
Example: "3 signs your circuit breaker needs replacement (most homeowners ignore #2)"
Posting Frequency: Quality Over Quantity
You don't need to post daily. You need to post consistently.
- Instagram: 3-4 times per week + daily stories
- Facebook: 3 times per week
- LinkedIn (if B2B): 3-5 times per week
- TikTok/Reels: 2-3 times per week if you can commit
The One Metric That Matters
Stop tracking likes. Stop tracking followers. Start tracking DMs and calls generated.
That's the only metric that pays your bills.
Your 7-Day Action Plan
- Day 1: Audit your last 30 posts. Categorize them using the 4-part framework. What's missing?
- Day 2: Take 10 photos of recent work. Get permission from customers.
- Day 3: Film 5 quick behind-the-scenes videos. Phone quality is fine.
- Day 4-7: Post one piece using the framework each day. Include a clear CTA every time.
Do this for 30 days and your DMs will start changing.
